I had the pleasure of attending one of the PGA’s “major” championships yesterday at Southern Hills CC in Tulsa (2007 PGA Championship). It was only a practice round, but it was pretty special! I drove up yesterday morning and met my old friend Michael Wilcox and a few of his preacher friends from NW Oklahoma. I had never been to Tulsa. The drive was really pretty, but it was HOTT! Yes, that’s with two “t’s.” The temperature was over 100 degrees, and when you throw in the wind and humidity it was more like 107 degrees. UGH!!
The course was beautiful and watching these guys practice was incredible. There is very little doubt in my mind why professional golfers make as much as they do. THEY ARE GOOD. Seeing them in person just reinforces that notion. The atmosphere was very nice and the Southern Hills/PGA staffers were top notch. I have attended live rounds at other events (Byron Nelson-Dallas), but being able to liesurely walk around and follow whomever was really quite enjoyable. I am sure a live round, say Sunday, would be the pinnacle, but the relaxed nature of the practice round afforded us more liberties and exposure to the course and players.
Among the players we “almost” said hello to and “almost” got autographs from were Justin Leonard, Vejay Singh, Davis Love III, Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood, and Sergio Garcia. Though I didn’t come away with any those sorts of things, I did find a rogue Titleist ProV1 golf ball. It was partially buried in between 9 and 18. I gave it to my boss for granting me the day off. It was the least I could do…. really, the least!
